I grew up with the Spice Girls, and despite their many problematic aspects (adult me still can’t get over the Margaret Thatcher thing), I absolutely believe that my early exposure to the “Girl Power” movement contributed strongly to who I’ve grown up to be. As this analysis has uncovered, while Girl Power feminism was not without its issues – including a lack of nuance and little desire to be truly radical – it was nevertheless an important moment in the rise of third wave feminism. In its mainstream appeal and popularity among young women, Girl Power feminism helped to make an entire generation of young girls feel more independent, confident, and self-aware. Through a variety of modes – including their music, film, and the characters they portrayed – the Spice Girls made it clear that, no matter who you were, you could be a “power girl”, ready to take on and change the world.
